No, it is.

Because the HUD is - or should be - directly within the eyesight of the pilot. My pilot model was done to conform to a properly rigged & scaled biped, and I found you actually need to have the pilot sitting really low to do this; which normally means a huge gap between their head and the cockpit.

The other thing, is that the HUD itself is hard to make transparent; it screws up the rendering order - or at least, I think it would - because that's hierarchy based.
