I dunno what you should do. I think your original idea was good.
You could always flash them on and off while people (and admins) are looking in the thread. That way thy would just be like "WTF was that?" and then it be gone the next couple of minutes. Once the admins lock the thread no one can reply so its that much more time until they realized what happened.....
