Missing the cash would probably be more realistic. But I find the though of Gamespy being simply incompetent much more logical.
Say, what would it cost to host HLP on some ad-free, reliable server?

Good point, too. What is on this server that's making you lose money?
Also, what makes you think the HLP staff has anything to with it? As far as I know (which isn't much), it's the GS staff that's responsible for stuff like that.
As for whoever posted about the Wiki (somewhere), don't bother asking, as it's well and truly buggered most likely due to the structure of the scripts used to build it. I *think* they're tied into the databases, which is what this is nailing, but I'm not sure.
