I have. I have seen Star Trek lines even in news reports.

I hear people say "damn it, Jim, I'm a doctor not a ____" all the time. But I've never heard anyone quote SG-1. :/

That's pretty much the whole point. Putting relative merits aside, SG-1 couldn't even dream of achieving the complete cultural pervasiveness that Star Trek's 40+ years, or Star Wars's 30+, have managed. Even people who have never seen the series/movies in question are able to spout off lines and characters from them.

Well, Stargate and other new series aren't really the kind of light-hearted, humorous show that would produce a memorable quote that's both distinctive and used repeatedly. At least I have yet to notice one...

"Ya think?"

"Remember that time when you blew up a sun?"

More to the point, if I walk up to somebody on the street and say "Spock" I probably have a chance higher than 75% they'll know who the f### that is.

If I say "Teal'c" I'd be damn lucky for a 50%.

I'd say 5%.

On the other hand Star Trek has been around since the late 60's, part of it is just because of age.

Stargate has done well - It has 15 seasons, four movies (including the original and the one in production) and a third series is on the way.

On the other other hand (wait, who are we talking to here? Shiva? ), not many people could quote bits of - for example - Lost in Space, which is even older. So it can't just be age - age makes it more likely to be forgotten, surely?

Because lost in space died young and except that crappy remake was never revived. Star trek has 5 TV series and 11 theaterical movies, not the straight to dvd movies that stargate comes out with. Like I said, age is only part of the reason.

How many of those movies were released in theaters? From what I heard about trek movies 2-6, they were smash hits when released in the theaters, complete with people lining up around the block to see them.

I have to admit, I'm getting slightly confused - what are we actually discussing here?
