It outlived itself. Can't please everyone. Besides I haven't decided what to do with the theme next. Not to mention the old one had lots of bugs

I would suggest that the Reply and New Topic buttons are more noticeable, but since this may well not be the final layout, it's a moot point.

No, I don't think so. I do keep a good eye on the comings and goings here, it's not that hard. It's just the changeover changed all the user permissions.
