Right, so stoop to a difference in names and styles of play in entertainment to make excuses on why americans or euroepans (depending on who you are) as a whole are bad people. Yeah, cause thats the greatest of the world's concerns

Really, why does every thread about sports degenerate into an "America Sucks because..." thread. I'm sick of it. Don't like the US? Whoop-de-doo. Keep the annoying f#####g arrogance to yourselves. please.

Because americans f**king start it. :p If we want to talk about the ashes why do americans feel the need to butt in at all?

Don't like cricket. Leave the thread and go discuss something else.

The only reason I posted in this thread in the first place was because I had no idea what "ashes" was referring to. I then remarked on the strangeness of receiving ashes as a prize, which even you cricket fans have to admit is just a little on the weird side. What I don't understand is why every mention of American sports immediately denigrates into outright bashing by non-Americans. I may say that cricket is downright weird, or that soccer (and yes, I'll keep using that term, thank you very much :P) bores me to death, but it's all in fun. The other side, however, seems determined to treat even the slightest mention of American sports with utter disdain. Why not leave well enough alone? We have our sports, you have yours, and, for future reference, I don't give a damn how many countries play soccer. Last time I checked, there's a hell of a lot more people than just Americans playing baseball (see Latin America, Japan, Australia), hockey (besides Canadians, of course, there's a great deal of Eastern Europe and Russia), basketball (the Argentinian team won the gold medal at the last Olympics), and even American football (last time I checked, its popularity is growing in Germany. Or how about lacrosse, which was invented by Native Americans but seems to be pretty popular elsewhere? So, as it turns out, "our" sports really aren't just ours.

Kieto, have you even seen any of the sports to which you are referring? I dare you to watch a professional hockey game and compare it to that strange thing which is field hockey (the only part of which is good are the short skirts that the girls wear :D). Girly? Tell that to a defender who enjoys bashing people into the boards with enough force to break their ribs. Football "armored rugby"? Hardly. It actually has organization, tactics, strategy, and play-calling, whereas rugby seems to be "tackle the guy with the ball." Consider, also, that football players get knocked out cold even with all of the pads they're wearing. They can experience forces of 20-30 Gs with each collision. Try telling me that's girly. I'd also like you to head to the streets of Queens and tell streetball players that basketball is for girls, or start an argument with a guy who can crush 500-foot home runs. You might consider getting a good insurance policy before doing any of these things. :P

LOL I certainly wouldn't tell the Canadian National Team they were a bunch of girls ;) Unless it was the women's team of course, but even then, I wouldn't be sure ;)

For the record:

Nobody here plays baseball. Well, people play it, but nobody really gives a crap about it. Basketball has only a slightly higher profile.

As a field hockey player (goalie), I'm obliged to defend my sport. You guys chuck on my pads one day, stand in goals, have state level players shooting at you, and then tell me it's girly. :D

American football is boring as hell, and they practically never kick it, thus disallowing it the use of the term football. All they seem to use there feet for is running.

Soccer bores me as well. It's profile over here is only a little higher than basketball, despite a recent big advertising push.

I don't get people who say cricket is weird. It's not at all a complex game. One guy bowls the ball, the other guy hits it and they run between the stumps to score points. If he hits it big, he scores more points. If the ball hits the stumps, or he's caught, he's out. Sure, there're details, like LBWs, bowling actions etc. but it's no more complex than baseball.

Not that ut matters. AFL is the prince of all spectator sports anyway, so all this is irrelevant. Carn the Eagles!

Yeah, but everyone outside England and Oz promptly fell asleep.
And no, that's not what started it. You just want to be an assclown and pin it on me, because I complained.

No, it was an honest mistake, I thought you were responding to the main subject of the thread, Cricket.

Wait, Black Wolf...you mean men play field hockey over there? Weird...In America, it's an all-girl sport. That's where my skirt comment came from; everyone loved to watch field hockey players in high school. :P I still don't understand how anyone could call American football boring, but I will agree that the name doesn't really fit. To me, football is one of the most strategic and demanding sports. Not only are the hits absolutely punishing (my one friend in high school was on the offensive line, and he made it pretty clear how brutal it gets), but as a quarterback, you have to have split-second decision-making skills. Since there are only 16 games in a season, every one counts, and every play you call has to be dead-on or you're screwed. Seeing your quarterback open up and hit the receiver 50 yards downfield...there's no better feeling. Tell you what: If you're ever in Philadelphia, I'll take you to an Eagles game, and you can tell me if it's still boring when you're surrounded by 70,000 wasted, screaming fans. :P

I've seen parts of an AFL game, and while I don't understand anything that's going on, it looks crazy enough to be a lot of fun. :) I think that J.K. Rowling must have seen a game or two before coming up with the idea of Quidditch. Think about it: round field, crazy ball passing...just add in the broomsticks, and you've got it! :P
