The fact of the matter is that, in the general section at least, we had people complaining about it. Now, I don't want to ignore them any more than I want to ignore you. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from posting smileys in normal threads, if you so wish, I don't have a problem unless peoplle complain and find it annoying 
I'd rather edit the post than lock threads, that's why I cleaned the other one, but it takes bloody ages, so it's even better to ask that people don't do it too much.
