Basic Information

The Anti-Solar Forces, commonly referred to as the "ASF" for short, was formed after the announcement of Project Odyssey - the Delta Serpentis - Sol Jump Gate. Originally a splinter group of the GTVA, the ASF eventually evolved into an open rebellion, and later, a full-fledged hostile faction over the course of thirty years.

The key to the ASF's longevity was it's positioning. Originating in Laramis, the production facility of the Mjolnir remote beam cannon, as well as being a choke-point to the resource-rich yet poorly-defended systems beyond allowed the ASF to heavily blockade the node with numerous sentry gun grids, and subdue the few GTVA loyalists remaining in the backwater systems.

Another critical point was the ASF's distancing from combat despite open hostility. The ASF has had no major engagements with the GTVA after operation Black Dawn near the start of the ASF's establishment. Aside from a few minor border skirmishes, the ASF has had no conflict against the GTVA at all. Instead of open warfare, the ASF dedicated its forces to entrench the jump node in Laramis, creating a nearly impenetrable blockade around the single jump node.

Military

In comparison to the GTVA, the ASF has relatively low military strength, though the majority of it is concentrated in a single location. Due to the lack of infrastructure to create warships larger than cruisers. The ASF only fields a single Hecate-class destroyer - their flagship the ASD Ragnarok, and several corvettes as their only ships larger than a cruiser. The majority of their forces are cruiser battlegroups and sentry gun grids.

Because the Anti-Solar Forces' only ship production facility, the orbital shipyards of Laramis, has a very limited production capacity, the ASF have conducted various operations to capture GTVA craft in Ross 128. These stolen warships, along with defectors, are the main reason ASF warships have similar technology as the most modern GTVA warships despite around 30 years of separation.

Government and Economy

As the Anti-Solar Forces have been separated from the GTVA and holding their own systems for nearly 30 years, they had to develop a government and economy of their own.

The ASF can be described as a one-man show - the government is a military dictatorship, run by Supreme Admiral Varunas Karigaila. He uses his forces to enforce his laws and regulate the economy to suit his needs. These systems make the ASF more than simply a rebellion, bringing it closer to an actual government. It was expected that they would change their name due to this, but for whatever reason, they have not.

I'm more concerned with the reasons for their rebellion and the motivations of the supporters. People do not rebel and simply subject themselves to an oppressive dictatorship for no reason. There must either be some appeal from it (ie. power, greater standard of life) or a political driving force behind this uprising. Furthermore, what are they actually trying to achieve by this rebellion? Halting of the reunion with Sol, regime change, what?

Is there no method behind the madness?

Well, there are several reasons.

1. The use of the Saber class cruisers ( info of them will be posted later on :P ) on the ASF side.

2. Operation Black Dawn. If you paid attention to this intel entry, you'd notice the ASF being a power for 30 years or so. Black Dawn happened only a few years after the Second Shivan Incursion. GTVA was still recovering. What few capable ships they still had were on the other side of GTVA space.

GTVA did retaliate. Heavily. It was not enough. 'Black Dawn' is in the works, you'll see everything about the rise of the ASF. How they did, why they did, and so on.

The reasons for why they rebeled will be revealed later- the information is highly classified. Getting clearance to the media is not easy.

Do the people know exactly why they are rebelling? If not, I'm calling bull.

The NTF succeeded only because Bosch was a magnificent orator and managed to stir up the anger against the Vasudans. The NTF probably would not have worked if not for the anti-Vasudan overtones of the rebellion; it gave them something to fight and die for. Unless there is a similar sentiment among the peoples of Laramis and the fringe systems (miner rights? economy threatened by a reunion Sol?) there is no credible reason for such a rebellion, especially one as oppressive as is described.

Uhm, you are somewhat implying that the GTVA lost most of its assets during the Second Shivan Incursion...

IMHO, the consequences of Capella's loss are a bit exaggerated... I don't think the GTVA armada was significantly weakened (remember, also, that ships like the Messana and the Hecate - which were operating in Capella - managed to escape before the cataclysm). I think the empty spaces left by significant losses may have been filled with a Roman-like system. At some point in their history, the Romans diminished the number of legions and increased the number of soldiers per legion for economical/strategic reasons.

In a comparable way, the GTVA may have reduced the number of assets per fleet and made sure that a certain number forces could replace the losses without touching the original integrity and stability.

Obviously, I have no objections against the moral/psychological consequences of the Capella disaster to GTVA citizens.

You have to remember that you haven't seen most of the combatants in Capella. There were a lot of losses there. Besides that, the economic crysis and the moral consequences, and etc.

Of course it wasn't so... ahem, apocalyptic, as in, for example, Derelict. Yet still, the consequence was a lack of ships to operate in the GTVA systems. Most of them guarded the core and former NTF systems.

@Mobius:

He's not saying the GTVA lost its assets during the Second Shivan Incursion.

He's saying most GTVA ships were already occupied cleaning up the mess the Shivans and NTF made on the other side of known space. I doubt there would be a lot of ships dicking around in Laramis and Luyten when you've got a full-scale rebellion and a potential Shivan invasion looming on the other side of space.

So, the datafile parameters imply that there are other factions at work, also against the GTVA. Is the GTVA fighting a war on multiple fronts, or is the ASF the only enemy at the premise of the campaign?

#14
I guess those factions might be working "behind the lines" and/or be a political threat rather than an actual military threat to the GTVA. Hostilities may be the result of political constrasts, only.
