.bak files are a backup of the previous version of the mission. Very useful if something corrupts your current version.

This is off-topic, but I just received a new e-mail notifying me of a PM on sectorgame, but there is no new. Might be an e-mail notification of the previous one, but then it'd be late 20+ days.
