...was declared officially dead today at about 21:00 PM. The disk was only about nine months old, and it was a fine WD 250GB HDD. The cause of death were bad sectors in the boot sector, that destroyed the MFT completely. The bad sectors kept returning despite all efforts, and no data could be saved from the old drives.
Well, I just lost 4 years of data, and my entire porn collection. I feel like a piece of me just died.

Porn first and everything else comes last... you men... *tut tut tut*
I have gotten into the habit of backing up my file (writings) and experimental data all the time these days. Just experimental raw data alone takes up to about 15GB of my hard drive a year. I don't have time for games or movies (not that I am a big fan of games) recently in particular because of school work... Whops, off topic again!

If it gets disk-shaped when it's hard, you might want to consider seeing a doctor.
But yes, regular backups = very good thing. I suffered through a hard drive intermittently suffering the Click o' Doom for several months before replacing it, and while I managed to luck out that time, I'm never going to take that chance again. I have over 20 DVD+R/RWs lying around with all sorts of backed-up files; I should really just bite the bullet and get an external at some point to save myself the bother.
