The topic says it all. Sadly, if we changed, that would mean every modification would be lost and would need to be installed again. Oh, and it's springtime - So I guess it's time I started working on some things around here before we all die from dust buildup. :P

What would be the advantages of VBulletin. Cause I see very little I can do over on Game-Warden or the old HLP which I can't do here.

To be honest, of the three I like SMF's ability to allow you to drop in, read a few posts and then go away without resetting the list of unviewed topics.

A switch to SMF would probably mean I'd visit more often. You can decide for yourself if that's a good thing or not :p

I've heard that V-B is more secure. Two Phpbb's that I know of that got hacked:

1)Gameedit.net: Nightmare rebuilt Gameedit.com using phpbb and it was going well, then (according to him) hackers took it down. He rebuilt using V-B.

2)6DOFbb.com: Koolbear created 6dofbb, I guess he got tired of running the DBB, and he wanted to be open to other games as well. It got hacked. It is still there, LOL! But there has been no activity since being hacked.

I like the easy modability of phpbb, but that same modability may be the reason it is more susceptible to attack.

a couple of other phpbb sites, that did not get hacked: Decentforum.de, and one I admin: pack270.us forum board. This is a Cub Scout form, I have two public forums and they get a lot of spam, mostly porno links. Today I deleted a user who tried to sign up using an email "[email protected] ...yeah right, I'm gonna approve that one! :badgrin:

Disadvantage I see of VB: you have to pay for it. I don't know what their policy is on upgrades, though.

Another possibility is there is a mod for wakkawiki to integrate with phpbb, if you have ever considered adding a wikki.

I think these boards are fine, trouble is that I don't know what goes into coding the forums....or however it is you change things on them.

Well, I think that since we only know of 2 out of the hundreds of PHPBB forums on the net got hacked, and that nto even one that makes money got hacked, I'm asuming we're safe? SO why switch? At elast warn us, so I can copy down all important info from my PM box. OR ELSE YOU WILL PAY THE PRICE!! :P (yet partially serious)

I suppose it really depends on how much time you have to be honest, and which you are most comfortable with. There's no point upgrading to something you are unfamiliar with unless there are discernible advantages to the effort ;)
