For the next Freespace generation

There may appear many more Freespaces in the future. And there are lots of cool things inside. But always something will be missing at every game. It is something we think about and want it in Freespace, but we can't have it.
What's the idea?
To write in here as many things you would like to appear new in Freespace.

Of course an FS3 will most likely never happen. But in an ideal world... ;)

After reading back though the transcripts for the FS1 cutscenes (thanks to karajorma's FAQ), I wouldn't mind delving further into the Ancients' backstory, learning a bit more about them. The narration during the Ancients cutscenes intrigued me, especially lines like: "Our technology, our achievements, if ever they are seen again, will spawn none of the awe that filled our conquests."

This passage makes me wonder about what kind of ships and weapons the Ancients might have possessed. Despite them being of a time long before the GTA/PVN, could their technology have been far more advanced? (They might not have been able to defend themselves against the Shivans like the GTVA learned to, but after all, it was the Ancients who were believed to have made the Knossos portal. They'd have to be more advanced in some respects.)

So if there ever were an FS3, I'd personally like to see - by whatever means - the inclusion of an Ancient fighter or destroyer. Just something that can help us learn more about their once great empire and achievements.

That's a point actually: I don't remember seeing one, but have there been any fan-made mods which might have attempted to explore the Ancients further?

We can have anything we want in Freespace thanks to The Source Code Project and Mods. It just takes patience and it helps if you're friendly with the coders.

That's a really good idea, Judge.
But only the ancients? I would say that the ships from all existing Freespaces to go in the next generation, the ancients, the existing ones and the new which will appear.

But the large part of the missions are almost with the same objective. I'd like some missions were you need to land on a planet or fight in it's atmosphere or leave it when you need to call for the suporter or other things.

And - this is special - when the battle "range" is very large or when you're on a planet, it would be cool to open a special 3D map to choose a warp destination for escapings, getting across the battle zone or a faster and safe reload (of course, you would need energy for this).

Oh no, I didn't mean just the Ancients. By all means use the existing and new GTVA/Shivan ships/weapons etc. I meant more along the lines of various groups (be it GTVA or whatever) learning even more about the Ancients and their technology. Possibly leading to discovering a functioning Ancient vessel to use themselves, or maybe even making something by combining Terran/Vasudan technology with Ancient technology - a GTVA/Ancient hybrid fighter perhaps? According to the FS1 cutscenes, the Ancients were exploring and populating numerous systems - surely remanants of their civilisation could be found in places besides Altair? (where the Vasudans found the info on how to destroy the Lucifer).

That's good to hear. Hopefully they'll crop up somewhere down the line, it'd be interesting to see them in action.

That's another thing I've wondered about actually. I forget where it was exactly, but one briefing scene in FS2 talked about evacuations, and mentioned ground troops. It was that which made me realise: there's more to the GTVA's efforts than pilots and space battles. Sure, it wouldn't be a space sim-combat like FS games are meant to be, but what would it be like being a GTVA ground troop? What would you face? What weapons could you use?

Ooh give me an FS spin-off in an FPS style! :mrgreen: It's the FS Universe but from a whole new perspective!

I don't know exactly what, where and how, but it could be close to Star Wars, I'm sure of it!
