Well, between you, me and the doorpost, and because this is a passworded forum I will say this...
I worked about 17 years ago with Codemasters, a small company that tended to release games written by home users at the time. I did some sprite routines and lookup tables in Z80 machine code an an Amstrad 6128, that they wanted to use to improve a game they'd been sent. Every step of the process was tested, not using programmers, who will subconciously avoid things they know might be a bit 'dodgy', but by players, because, obviously, it was them who would play the actual game.
When most people start writing computer games, they do it for one reason and one reason only, to hear other people turn round and say 'That's brilliant!'
Mr Smart does not do this, his only concern is the money, he does not like, or even know Freespace., and he has obviously not got the passion required to devote himself to a game, he himself has said as much. So he writes code for money only, we call those Binary Whores. No Binary Whore has EVER written a good game, look at the Elite Sequels, where Brabham told Bell that he could do a better job on his own. A similar situation, great idea, complete lack of commitment or programming ability, and a whole string of half-fix patches.
The simple fact of the matter is that Derek has sold out, and he knows he has, that is why he is such as asshole about things. Because he knows SCP is already better than anything he could ever do, but wants to try and make the SCP look like a complete waste in order to sell his own game.
As for his trained monkeys in Avault, well, they seem to like wrapping people up in a nice stereotyped box of 'Freespace Fanboys' and apply attributes to them. Considering Mr Smart's roots, and his people have suffered more at the hands of prejudice than most, I am amazed that he condones it, but then, it probably suits him.
So, if FS3 comes out by him, I won't be buying it, even if it was a good game, which I am certain it would not be.
