Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#32Could you, in theory, put together a life size model using a series of small parts?
The Expanse. Watch it!
Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#33It looks like it is made out of wax. You could make Shivan candles maybe.
Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#34I don't see any reason why not, with a little engineering, if it's anywhere nears as strong as he says it is. (Which I have no reason to doubt)Could you, in theory, put together a life size model using a series of small parts?
Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#35Haha you could indeed build a lifesize one, but you really, really, really shouldn't. It'd be like trying to send someone an entire book by SMS.
Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#36Maybe with a big enough printer in the future, it would be easier to print bigger things. If the printer is really big, it can be separated into modules. Of course you would be using a lot more material and I'm guessing that would cost a lot more.

Hide your local stars and Colossii, the Sathanas is in town!
21cm (8.25") of Rga_Noris flavoured death-with-spikes-on-it.
(Note the arms aren't glued yet due to the certain doom they would face if I tried to send it to the painter like that. Go blutac. )

Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#38Hmm, it does look rather nice in glossy black. Though I'm also wondering how the paintjob will turn out, I bet it won't be easy with the amount of detail on it.
Any particular reason this one is black, while the Shivan (a few posts up) is white? AFAIK they should have roughly the same colour scheme in the end...

Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#39I guess they can't print it to have red and black like the in game model, huh? Each model that pops out can only be one color, it looks like. Is it too hard for the machine to pop something out that has many colors instead of one color?
Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#40I switched over to black ABS rather than white for this one, since I had it lying around taking up space. Also, I imagine it would take up more paint trying to hide the white under a layer of black than it would if the ship were black to begin with.
The printer itself can only produce a single colour, but there are sintering printers that can add ink colour to each layer just like an colourjet printer does. However their cost is well into the 5 or 6 digit realm. A bit beyond my means.

#43Seriously, it does look like wax. I wonder if it ignites easily. Space battles and flames. Also looks like some kind of artificial food material to make a cake with hard vanilla coating or something (actually white chocolate). It actually looks tasty. Maybe you will make and sell those one-of-a-kind items with your miniature factory.
Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#44The GTA logo on the nameplate is a nice touch. How'd you put the antennas in? Hold them in place during printing?
Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
#45A really tiny drill and then pliers and/or a hammer. Like I said - the models are surprisingly tough!
