I think most people use clients as a preference, but I could throw up a java applet too...

Most people do, but you'd be surprised. In my experience, a lot of "first-time IRC'er" traffic comes in the form of easy-to-use applets.
The only problem is they often take a long time to load and throw up security and unsigned applet warnings, and spook people.

All the IRC client's I've used so far have barfed all over me at some point. 's why I don't really use the system.

At least one of them started just locking up whenever I opened it, and mIRC was never entirely userfriendly and lost stored info a few times. I went through three or four and none of them were really useful or helpful to me so I stopped.How so?

Have been using Mirc for a decade myself - never had a single problem with it. Plenty of other aps out there, though.
