seriously, strangest thing ever. so, i got a new computer, popped in the FS disc, got the game all installed and everything, and i get hit with.....

Freespace has detected that you only have -256MB of free memory freespace requires yadayaddam make sure you aren't running SMARTDRV.EXE as that mem can't be blah blah.

now. i searched my computer, and lo and behold, that there .exe doesn't seem to exist. aaaaaaanyone know how to fix that?

Use FreeSpace Open/SCP. That will fix it.

Like Shadow said. The original FS (from 1999) will go nuts when it finds over 2GB of RAM, which is what you experienced. FSO will work fine on all modern systems.
