So I dunno how to get my ships to fire there main beam guns and watching 2 ships shoot at eachother for a while is boring <.<

In Mission Specs, enable "beam-free all ships".

But, before you start asking more, take a look through the help files. Especially the Extended Walkthrough is invaluably helpful - it will have you make a full-on mission while going through all the editors.

I didnt see that command on Mission Specs is it called somthing else? and I been trying to use it some

NB: the beam-free all checkbox is only on the SCP (open source) version of FRED2, not the unmodified retail one. Ifyou're using the retail version, IIRC you need to apply a beam-free SEXP to each ship (see the tutorial for details on SEXPs et al)

You can get to the extended walkthrough via the help menu of FRED. It is well worth actually doing the walkthrough rather than simply reading it as you will learn a hell of a lot more that way.

My FAQ has a detailed help section for FRED that can explain some of the other common stumbling blocks.

It usually comes together with your build. It's called something like "fred2_open_3_6_10r-20090103_r5029.exe".

Mines retailed since i got it from gog.com I havnt really had a computer of my own til recently

Well, download the latest build fitting your operating system from here and unpack all 4 files into your main FS2 directory.

Then, in order to get the awesome graphics, follow the steps in here. Enjoy!

The all ships-beam-freed is a lot harder to miss for one thing. Veldel only had the retail version so he didn't have that advantage.
