Freespace 2 problems

#1
I have had Freespace 2 before, but I recently downloaded it again from the Underdogs. I was surprised to find that the file was much bigger than I remembered it to be, 650 megs or so, last time I beleive it was a mere 250.

I got the game running and I noticed it now had music, briefing and cute little movies to go along with it, unlike the last time I played. I must assume then that HotU updated their version of the game while I was away.
Anyway, when I got through the briefing on the first mission, and I pressed the continue button so that I could get into the fight, my screen went black, briefly, and then FS shut down and disappeared. Several attempts to remedy this have been futile, including my attempt to reinstall. However, with the new HotU version, you don't so much install the game, as you do throw it casually onto your hardrive. Somewhat disappointing, in my opinion. The game automatically created an error log, however I won't claim to know what the hell it's talking about, please take a look and tell me what you think.

Some Specs:

Cpu type: Intel i1586
Speed: 2.97 gigahertz
Ram: 512
I've got some GeForce card, it's a 128.

Basically, I can run Half Life 2, but not Freespace 2? Where's the justice in that?

I apologize profusely if this thread has been made elsewhere.

Edit: Or is in the wrong forum. How coincidental.
"My blood cries out for the vengeance of my people's blood, which can only be repaid with twice as much blood! Or maybe three times as much blood! Like, if you went to hell and it was full of blood, and that blood was on fire, and it was raining blood, then maybe THAT would be enough blood. But, uh... probably not."

That's my fault :D The old HotU version was ripped by Stryke and he did a good job for such a small rip but there were a lot of things missing and it installed in a way that made it very hard to update. I figured that HotU probably has more bandwidth now so things could be improved. The new version is basically FS2 without the cutscenes.
However, with the new HotU version, you don't so much install the game, as you do throw it casually onto your hardrive. Somewhat disappointing, in my opinion.

Even if I had written an installer it wouldn't do anything other than simply dump the files. There isn't really anything else that needs to be done when it comes to installing. Sure it makes uninstalling a little trickier but not hugely so.

Anyway, when I got through the briefing on the first mission, and I pressed the continue button so that I could get into the fight, my screen went black, briefly, and then FS shut down and disappeared. Several attempts to remedy this have been futile, including my attempt to reinstall.

I tested the build before I uploaded it and it worked perfectly for me. So either it simply doesn't like your PC or you've installed something in the wrong place.

I suggest you try making a new pilot if you haven't already. If that doesn't solve it then follow Black Wolf's advice and install FS2_Open (For now just install the build and launcher. Leave the media VPs alone until we can get FS2_Open itself to work. If that doesn't solve it then post again and I'll suggest some other things. :)
