Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!

I switched over to black ABS rather than white for this one, since I had it lying around taking up space. Also, I imagine it would take up more paint trying to hide the white under a layer of black than it would if the ship were black to begin with. The printer itself can only produce a single colou...

Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!

Ok well I'd call that a success! Meet Karl, distant subspatial cousin of Carl. Thrice removed. He may be held together with a bit of bluetac pending some minor repairs, but: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/3D_Printer_Stuff/20120606_211345.jpg With a pen for size referenc...

Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!

The Fenris is partially hollow, but that caused more problems than it solved, so the Aeolus is filled. However 'filled' doesn't quite mean 'solid' here - the printer can be set to lay down a 0-100% fill volume, where it lays down a kind of latticework interior to every layer. I use 20% fill normally...

Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!

Well there's a huge variety of printers, and what you're describing sounds like it has one material to make the object, and a soluble material to make the support structures. The support structures come in handy when you need to print things with overhangs - they allow the material to be laid onto a...

Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!

Any plan for non-FS ships in the future? Yeah sure - all I need is a model file, a desired size, and a textured reference pic for the painter if you want it painted. :) They are fed either solid bricks of material or perhaps a powder/liquid depending on the type. My college has a 36" cube one which...

Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!

The printable volume is 14x14x10cm, but since you can print in any orientation, the maximum size is a bit bigger than 14cm if you print diagonally (assuming your model fits nicely in that orientation!)

You can always split stuff up and print it separately - then glue or bolt it back together. :)

3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/3D_Printer_Stuff/20120530_201108.jpg So I bought and built a 3D printer - (a Reprap Huxley), which means I can now do cool stuff like this! :D These models are around 13cm long, and have been amazingly painted by a friend of mine who's an...

Re: September 22nd

Blackwood be nearly done! Made a successful conversion and ingame test (though turns out that if you have too many debris pieces, your whole ship refuses to collide with anything at all. Who knew?), so now I'm just finishing off POF data and a shine/normal map. :)
