    Hey :)
  • XelionsMon Mar 16, 2020 2:07 pm
Did you play Quake II with any HD package upgrades? I honestly can't tell
  • HunterTue Mar 17, 2020 2:32 am
Only the port , which does have some modern enhancements. But I didn't use any HD texture packs or high poly stuff, it's all just base assets.
  • HunterTue Mar 17, 2020 2:32 am
For me, most games from that era are better played as vanilla as possible, minus the ports which add widescreen support and better rendering of original assets.
  • XelionsSat Mar 28, 2020 6:03 pm
Why SD? - Straying from the path seems to be common when games and/or assets are remastered to a higher definition. Thats really the only reason I can think of.
  • HunterSat Apr 18, 2020 3:06 am
Quake 2 with RTX looks nice, but unfortunately I don't have the hardware for that (also not sure if it would work on the linux ports anyway)
  • HunterSat Apr 18, 2020 3:09 am
This is my issue with D2-XL (Descent 2 HD port), it just looks weird to me. I prefer the Rebirth port which maintains the classic style.
  • XelionsSat Apr 18, 2020 7:05 pm
When you say hardware what would you need?
  • XelionsSat Apr 18, 2020 7:11 pm
Just saw the announce trailer for Quake RTX. An RTX card would be a start  and my most recent rig doesn't even have that. It looks good, but why does RTX show every room like some one has switched the light on!?
  • XelionsSun Apr 19, 2020 8:34 am
This looks like a better example of Ray traci
  • XelionsSun Apr 19, 2020 8:36 am
  • HunterMon Apr 20, 2020 5:02 am
I've never been an early adopter of tech to be honest - I'll probably get an RTX card in about 5 years or something
  • HunterMon Apr 20, 2020 5:03 am
My most recent purchase was a 2-3 year old Radeon. And it's a mid range card.
  • XelionsTue Apr 21, 2020 3:20 pm
5 years is a long time..
  • XelionsTue Apr 21, 2020 3:22 pm
I don't wanna even mention whats in the system I'm running now, but my new build has a GTX 1660 super :)
  • HunterSat Apr 25, 2020 1:29 pm
I think I'd gladly have new hardware, but it's just never in my budget.
  • HunterSat Apr 25, 2020 1:29 pm
So I just make do and play mostly older games. Which is fine by me - there are thousands of games!
  • XelionsMon Apr 27, 2020 4:56 pm
Prior to this year I hadn't purchased a new complete system or laptop in a long, long time. I just gotta finish building it
  • XelionsMon Apr 27, 2020 4:57 pm
There are too many but I always try to look for good story based games that are outside the classic genre or scifi
  • HunterTue Apr 28, 2020 4:51 am
I am a borderline gamer to be honest. Not that big into modern gaming, in fact I barely know anything about the most popular titles.
  • HunterTue Apr 28, 2020 4:52 am
I guess I'm just very particular about games.
  • XelionsTue Apr 28, 2020 8:59 am
Not into gaming much myself now a days - just a nintendo fanboi with some popular titles from Zelda, Metroid and Mario. Playing a Zelda title atm back from early 2000s that I never played
  • XelionsTue Apr 28, 2020 9:02 am
I can see that. I mean I've stuck with the classics a lot too or at the very least the games I've played many, many years ago :)
  • HunterWed Apr 29, 2020 11:11 am
Maybe I'm just too lazy :P
  • XelionsFri May 01, 2020 11:41 am
Playing a game is a lot easier than modding one
  • XelionsFri May 01, 2020 11:41 am
Lot more fun to be had modding IMHO
  • HunterMon May 04, 2020 4:39 am
Yeah modding can be fun, though I think my modding skills are a little dated these days (a bit like my coding skills). I often think about learning something new, I just find it hard to sink my teeth into that something.
  • HunterTue May 05, 2020 6:12 am
So turns out the forum update broke the installation. Had to restore a backup - the database is a day old, BUT the file system is um.. possibly older in parts, not sure, there is definitely some missing data.
  • HunterTue May 05, 2020 6:12 am
And to your question (that is now gone), yes I used to work in tech, but not anymore. Also I'm not a programmer.
  • XelionsThu May 14, 2020 11:48 am
    File system? attachments?
  • XelionsThu May 14, 2020 11:49 am
Are you in tech or IT? or something completely different?
  • XelionsThu May 14, 2020 11:50 am
I meant in that sector
  • HunterFri May 15, 2020 2:19 am
    Attachments seem fine.
  • HunterFri May 15, 2020 2:20 am
Yeah I use a computer for work.
  • HunterFri May 15, 2020 2:21 am
    Definitely in that sector
  • XelionsSun May 17, 2020 1:13 pm
It's funny how you gave away so little information in that 2nd last comment
  • XelionsSun May 17, 2020 1:29 pm
That TestScene got me thinking about Lost Souls more  I looked at some of the Nightmares' ships. How did aldo even come up with the idea or designs - it's dark! I did see the wiki entry and could see where the inspiration was from but it mentioned the design changed regulary. Would be nice to see some concept art from begining to end
  • HunterTue May 19, 2020 2:43 am
Just don't go assuming I'm somekind of secret agent :P I just prefer to keep things private as this is an open channel publicly searchable.
  • HunterTue May 19, 2020 2:44 am
I have no idea how he came up with the designs. You could ask the same about any designer. In fact, I could ask myself the same question. How did I come up with a certain thing? No idea, it just happened... actually it bothers me a lot because I feel like it's a talent I don't know how to properly harness.
  • HunterTue May 19, 2020 2:45 am
Also, crap, I have to get root canal treatment..
  • XelionsWed May 20, 2020 2:20 pm
I'm all for privacy. I think thats why so many people lurk now adays too :pirate:
  • XelionsWed May 20, 2020 2:22 pm
Wasn't that the benefit of restricted forum topics?
  • XelionsWed May 20, 2020 2:23 pm
  • XelionsWed May 20, 2020 2:29 pm
I think it's a given that inspiration is drawn from many sources. Obviously sound is a different subject to visual design but I feel with concept art especially storyboard-like work you can guess where some design details may come from.
  • XelionsWed May 20, 2020 2:33 pm
Ouch  at any dental work
  • HunterSat May 23, 2020 6:50 am
I mean, I've done 3d modeling, level building, texturing, animations, voice work, music work, scripting, web design, web coding etc.. but I probably couldn't write a tutorial on any of those things :D I just poke at things until they work!
  • HunterSat May 23, 2020 6:51 am
Only thing I've not really done much of is writing.
  • HunterSat May 23, 2020 6:52 am
Perhaps I'll amend that at some point..
  • XelionsSat May 30, 2020 9:46 am
What software did/do you use for 3d modeling? With level building the software is game/game-type specific right?
  • XelionsSat May 30, 2020 10:21 am
I've found there's really handy tips and tricks with most skills, but are not written down anywhere in a single guide thats easily searchable online. A good example is voice work - buying/finding an inexpensive mic, using different materials: to cover the mic to improve recording, on modifying room accoustics. The time of day to record voice work, recommended software, etc. There's a collective wealth of information but the internet just doesn't seem to have it in the one place.
