Welcome to the Fellowship!
a nine-level set based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien
adapted to the 3D world of Descent 3®



   We follow the steps of the nine brave souls that took up the quest of the ONE ring, the ring to bind them all...the quest that was determined to destroy the ring in the fires of Mount Doom. 
   Join us in this epic journey!  We start in the bright and cheerful homeland of the Hobbits, where nothing "unexpected" ever happens.  Well, except for the adventures of a certain family.  From there we visit the Tower of Isengard and the Town of Bree before plunging into the depths of the Dwarven Mines.

   This level set was an adventure in itself.  Nine level builders from two continents came together to create it over a nine month period.  That seems to be a lot of "nines", heh.  Maybe Descent 3 will last nine years now?
   About half of the cast is German, the other American.  Also about half doesn't speak English and the other half doesn't speak German.  How did we all meet?   And how did we all communicate?  We met in the mines of Descent 3.  We played each others levels and enjoyed them.  It is no accident that a small community like Descent 3 should bring friends together, even if they don't speak the same language.  Many thanks to DigiJo, Diti, Floyd and Atan for translations.
   Without a common forum this would have been much more difficult.  Many thanks to Do_Checkor for providing an International Forum / English Embassy on his German site for this project!  In addition, he is hosting the website for this project, which was written by [LL]Diti.  Apologies to Diti’s girlfriend for dragging him into this project, hehe.  I also owe DigiJo a cake for replacing one certain custom texture in his level that also appeared in another level, over 1500 times!  Hehe.  Is chocolate okay?
   While almost all levels have custom textures, they were all inserted manually, rather than by game file, so all MAC and Linux players can enjoy this tale (about 45 custom textures in all).  In addition, there are several custom sound files too.  DigiJo has custom door sounds in level two and Diti provided two custom sounds that live in levels one and six.  See if you can hear them!  Level one uses the English version of the Ring Wraiths whispering "Shire Baggins" and level six uses the German version of Gollum saying "My precious".  There are not any custom ships, objects, weapons or scripts.
   Weapons?  The layout was up to each designer, although I did ensure that there were enough for 10 players to have fun.  Shark, in particular, had a lot of fun with his selection.  In deference to Krash, who loves his microwave, there are ten in the level...all just out of reach.
   With this many levels, the full set will probably be served on 10 or 15 minute cycles in anarchy modes.  If a server operator finds a favorite level, they are each available for individual download.  Capture the Flag has been tested extensively.

   During the course of this project we celebrated the 111th birthday of the master of this tale, J.R.R. Tolkien on January 3rd, 2003.  Quoted from Bilbo Baggins: "My eleventyfirst birthday, a rather curious number and a very respectable age for a hobbit!"  Rest in piece, Mr. Tolkien, your works are still alive today!

Description of Shire Baggins:       

   The Fellowship starts out in the nice and cheery area of Bag-end, the home of Bilbo Baggins.  The rolling green hills are the childhood home of Frodo where he spent an innocent childhood.  Never having done anything "unexpected" in his life, he still thrived for a life of adventure like his uncle Bilbo had.
Little did he know....

   In addition to the bridge, mill and local homes, there is a small cave system under the area.  Peculiar things can happen there.

Welcome to the Tower of Isengard, level 2 of the Fellowship project!

Description of the Tower of Isengard:       

   As Gandalf visits his friend and mentor Saruman the White, he discovers a terrible betrayal.  This is where horrible deeds are soon plotted against the brave nine.  Travel beneath the great spires to see the beginnings of terrible transformations...
   Hopefully most pilots have good video cards and the trees show up properly.  Some of the old voodoo cards will show the branches as squares.
   The Tower has three above-ground levels, make sure you find them all! There is an extensive underground area, from the basement of the Tower to the caves.  The bridge has two entrances and there are two more doors at other places on the terrain.
   All BLUE crystals, both on the terrain and underground, provide Energy.  In the sky, the all-seeing Eye of Sauron peers down.

Welcome to the Town of Bree, level 3 of the Fellowship set!

Description of the Town of Bree, home of the Inn of the Prancing Pony:       

   Town of Bree is designed as a 'Night looking' level.  We had lots of trouble making it work.  Planning it as a terrain level we soon ran into problems, nearly unplayable.
   Roadrunner's idea to make a 'terrain looking' level was the next good step. (LL)Atan fixed some last big errors in the level, this was the real last winner in making Roadrunner's idea possible.  Some versions later we were sure, that's the one, this one looks great and is playable for most of today's machines.
   Look for all the details inside the level, this took a long time to build and we hope that it's not just good looking stuff.  We hope that it has some nice gameplay inside and will bring fun.
   As said, Roadi made the main structure, some nice objects and did some polishing too.
   (LL)Atan placed the weapons, built some of the human houses, the Hobbit houses- yes that little special one too :) -,  the Inn, (look at the pony) and some other objects, too.
   Fischlein built some of the human houses (look at the bedroom :) ) and some nice outside objects, the flagrooms and lastly, he did the final lighting.

Welcome to the Doors of Moria, level 4 of the Fellowship set!

Description of the Doors of Moria:       

   This level starts at the entrance of the Dwarven Mines. The putrid swamp and eerie trees forecast bad things for the troop as they start their long underground journey. An additional entrance to the underworld is found beneath the rotten core of one of the trees.
   This level is one large loop, from the Doors to the tree roots. The main entrance leads to the main Dwarf stronghold, then to the incredible stonework spiral stairs.  Below that is the main Jail complex where many an intruder has met his doom, or his freedom. Beyond?  This is where the devilish Orcs have tunneled past the main entrance and gained entrance to the mines.  Somewhere in the depths is the way on...into the dark...
   Once you have entered the mines, watch for the axes and spears. The heads of each always point towards the respective bases.  If you see triple axes and spears, those bases are within sight, maybe just around the next corner?   The short Dwarfs use the axes, the taller Orcs use spears.

Description of the Dark Journey:       

   The Dark Journey begins where the impressive stonework of the Dwarves makes way to the cold stone of the mine proper.  Centuries of masons have created impressive bridges, ramps and stairs.  Do you have enough time to explore it all before you are discovered?  Keep your feet on the path to retrace the parties tracks up the high road.  Fall off the path and you will have to descend to the low road and do a lot of climbing.  At the top is the way onward, but don't venture too far, the Orcs have established their own stronghold now!

Description of Gollum’s Pursuit:       

   As the party travels through the mines they come to a steep climb. At the top they are met by the sight of three impressive doorways.  Gandalf mutters "I have no memory of this place!"  While they are resting, Frodo discovers that they are being followed...by Gollum!
   This is the only symmetrical level in the set.  Sites include a large meeting room down below followed by a small jail area and a mess hall. The water passage past this leads to formations, caves and...danger!

Description of the Grand Hall of Dwarrodelf:       

   As the brave group trudges through the darkness, they come to a large chamber where their feeble light won't illuminate the walls or ceiling. 
Cold air chills the group as Gandalf excitedly exclaims "I will now risk a little real light".  His staff flares to life and illuminates a Grand Hall, the massive carved columns rising up out of sight.  In a room nearby is where they discover the final resting place of Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria.

Description of the Leap of Faith:       

   As the nine flee from the fiery Balrog, they stumble through a door...and almost fall to their deaths from a crumbling ledge!  The view beyond is of a series of crumbling stairs descending into lava filled depths.
  Climbing hurriedly down they approach a broken section that most can leap over (including a Dwarf that DID NOT want to be tossed)!
  The Orc base beyond the bottom of the stairs is the last of your concerns.  The Balrog is close on your heels!

Description of the Bridge of Khazad-dum:       

   The final challenge to re-enter the world of light is for the brave band to cross the Bridge of Khazad-dum.  However, the fiery Balrog is close on their heels.  Gandalf holds the demon at the center of the bridge, and defeats it...but at high cost.  The remainder of the party gasps as Gandalf falls into the dark...

   Wir folgen den Schritten der neun mutigen Seelen, die sich auf die Suche nach dem EINEN Ring begaben, dem Ring der sie alle binden soll...die Suche die dazu bestimmt war, den Ring in den Feuern des Mount Doom zu zerstören.
   Begleite uns auf dieser epischen Reise!  Wir starten im hellen und  freundlichen Heimatland der Hobbits, wo nie etwas “Unerwartetes” je geschah. Nun, ausgenommen die Abenteuer einer gewissen Familien. Von dort aus besuchen wir den Turm von Isengard und die Stadt von Bree, bevor wir uns in die Tiefen der Zwergen-Minen stürzen.
 
   Dieses Level-Set war selbst ein Abenteuer. Neun Level-Designer von zwei Kontinenten kamen zusammen um es über eine Dauer von neun Monaten zu kreieren. Das scheint eine Menge von “Neunen” zu sein, heh. Vielleicht wird Descent3 neun Jahre lang bestehen?

   Etwa die Hälfte der Mitglieder besteht aus Deutschen; die andere Hälfte aus Amerikanern. Auch sprechen etwa die Hälfte kein Englisch und die andere Hälfte spricht kein Deutsch. Wie kamen wir alle zusammen? Und wie kommunizierten wir? Wir trafen uns in den Minen von Descent 3.  Wir spielten die Level der jeweils anderen und genossen sie. Es ist kein Unfall, daß eine kleine Gemeinschaft wie die Community von Descent 3 Freunde zusammen bringt, auch wenn sie nicht die selbe Sprache sprechen. Vielen Dank an DigiJo, Atan, Diti und Floyd für die Übersetzungen.
   Ohne einem gemeinsamen Forum wäre alles noch viel schwieriger gewesen. Vielen Dank an Do_Checkor, der uns das “International Forum / English Embassy” auf seiner deutschen Site für dieses Projekt zur Verfügung stellte!  Zudem hostet er die Website zu diesem Projekt, welche von [LL]Diti erstellt wurde.  Entschuldigung an seine Freundin dafür, daß ich ihn in dieses Projekt mit hineingezogen habe, hehe.  Auch schulde ich DigiJo einen Kuchen dafür, daß er eine bestimmte eigene Textur in seinem Level durch eine andere erstetzt hatte, die auch in einem anderen Level benutzt wurde, über 1500 mal!  Hehe.  Ist Schokolade okay?
   Während fast alle Level selbst erstellte Texturen besitzen, sie wurden alle manuell eingefügt, so daß alle MAC- und Linux-Spieler diese Erzählung genießen können (insgesamt etwa 45 eigene Texturen).  Zusätzlich gibt es auch noch einige eigene Sound-Files. DigiJo hat eigene Tor-Sounds in Level zwei und Diti steuerte zwei eigene Sounds bei, die in Level eins und sechs zur Geltung kommen.  Schau, ob Du sie hören kannst!  Level eins benutzt die englische Version vom Wispern der Ringgeister ("Shire Baggins") und Level sechs benutzt die deutsche version von Gollums Spruch
"My precious" (“Mein Schatz”).  Es gibt weder eigene Shiffe, Objekte, Waffen oder Skripte.
   Waffen?  Das Layout war jedem Designer selbst überlassen. Ich stellte nur sicher, daß es dort genug gibt, damit 10 Spieler Spaß haben können. Speziell Shark hatte eine Menge Spaß mit seiner Auswahl. Als Tribut an Krash, der seine Microwave liebt, gibt es zehn Stück davon im Level...alle gerade mal so außerhalb der Reichweite plaziert.
 Wegen der vielen Level wird das Set wahrscheinlich mit einer Rotationsdauer von 10 bis 15 Minuten in Anarchie-Modi angeboten werden. Falls ein Server-Betreiber einen favorisierten Level findet: Sie sind jeweils einzeln zum Herunterladen erhältlich. Capture the Flag wurde ausführlichst getestet.

   Im Laufe der Zeit, in der das Projekt lief, feierten wir den 111. Geburtstag des Meisters dieser Geschichte, J.R.R. Tolkien, am 3. Januar 2003.  Kommentiert von Bilbo Beutlin: "Mein hundertundelfter Geburtstag, eine ziemlich merkwürdige Zahl und ein sehr respektables Alter für einen Hobbit!"  Ruhe in Frieden, Mr. Tolkien, Ihre Arbeiten sind heute immer noch lebendig!

Die Gefährten beginnen ihren Weg in der schönen und fröhlichem Region des Auenlandes, der Heimat von Bilbo Beutlin.
  In dessen günen Hügeln verbrachte Frodo seine unschuldige Kindheit.
  Er, der niemals irgend etwas "unerwartetes" in seinem Leben getan, entwickelt sich prächtig zu einem Abenteurer, so wie es sein Onkel Bilbo war.
Er wußte noch sooo wenig....

   Zusätzlich zur Brücke, Mühle und Hobbit-Häusern gibt es ein kleines Höhlensystem unterhalb der Oberfläche. Eigenartige Dinge könnten dort unten geschehen.

Willkommen zum “Turm von Isengard”, Level 2 des Fellowship-Sets!

Beschreibung von “Tower of Isengard” (Turm von Isengard):       

  Als Gandalf seinen Freund und Mentor Saruman der Weiße besucht, wird er von diesem verraten. Dies ist, wo schreckliche Pläne gegen die mutigen Neun geschmiedet werden. Reise zwischen den grossen Spitzen um den Beginn von abscheulichen Veränderungen zu sehen...
  Glücklicherweise besitzen die meisten Piloten eine gute Grafikkarte, damit die Bäume korrekt dargestellt werden. Einige der alten Voodoo-Karten stellen die Zweige als Rechtecke dar.
  Der Turm besitzt drei überirdisch angelegte Etagen, versichere Dich, sie alle zu finden!
Es gibt einen weiträumigen Untergrundbereich der sich zwischen dem Erdgeschoß des Turm bis zu den Höhlen erstreckt.  Die Brücke besitzt zwei Eingänge, und es existieren zwei weitere Tore weiter draußen im Terrain.
  Alle BLAUEN Kristalle, die auf dem Terrain und die im Untergrund, spenden Energie.  Im Himmel, schaut das allsehende Auge von Sauron auf Dich herab.

Willkommen zu “Town of Bree”, Level 3 des Fellowship-Sets!

Beschreibung zu “Town of Bree” (Stadt von Bree), Heimat des Gasthofs zum tänzelnden Pony:       

Die Stadt von Bree ist als in der Nacht spielender Level designed. Wir hatten eine Menge Probleme ihn zum Laufen zu bringen. Ihn als Terrain-Level zu planen brachte uns nach kurzer Zeit einiges an Problemen. Der Level wurde nahezu unspielbar. Roadrunners Idee den Level als "wie Terrain aussehend" zu gestalten war der nächste gute Schritt. (LL)Atan beseitigte die letzten großen Fehler in dem Level, was das Tüpfelchen auf dem i war, um Roadrunners Idee möglich zu machen. Einige Versionen später waren wir uns sicher, daß es das ist. Sie sah großartig aus und für die meisten Rechner spielbar.
  Halte Ausschau nach allen Details innerhalb des Levels. Es brauchte eine lange Zeit sie zu erbauen und wir hoffen, daß es nicht nur einfach gut aussehende Sachen sind. Wir hoffen daß es sich gut spielen läßt und einigen Spielspaß bringt.
  Wie schon gesagt, machte Roadi die Hauptstrukturen, einige feine Objekte und sorgte ebenso für den "letzten Schliff".
  (LL)Atan plazierte die Waffen, baute einige der "Menschen-Häuser", die "Hobbit-Häuser" - jawoll, das kleine besondere ebenfalls :) - , den Gasthof (sieh Dir das Pony an) und auch noch einige andere Objekte.
  Fischlein baute einige des "Menschen-Häuser" (sieh Dir das Schlafzimmer an :) ) sowie ebenfalls einige andere Außen-Objekte, die Flaggenräume und letztendlich machte er die entgültige Beleuchtung.

Willkommen zu “Doors of Moria”, Level 4 des Fellowship-Sets!

Beschreibung von “Doors of Moria” (Tore von Moria):       

   Dieser Level startet am Eingang zu den Zwergen-Minen. der sumpfige Morast und unheimliche Bäume sagen böse Dinge für die Truppe voraus als sie ihren langen Weg durch den Untergrund starten.
   Ein zusätzlicher Eingang zur Unterwelt ist neben den verrotteten Wurzeln einer der Bäume zu finden.
   Dieser Level ist eine große Schleife, von den Toren zu den Baumwurzeln.
Der Haupteingan führt zum Zwergenstützpunkt, dann zur unglaublichen Steinwendeltreppe. Darunter befindet sich der Gefängniskomplex, wo schon viele Eindringlinge ihrem Verderben begegneten – oder ihrer Freiheit. Und weiter?  Das ist, wo die teuflischen Orcs den Haupteingang untertunnelt und so einen Weg in die Minen gefunden haben. Irgendwo in den Tiefen führt der Weg weiter...in die Dunkelheit...
   Hast Du einmal die Minen betreten, schau Dich nach den Äxten und Speeren um. Deren Köpfen zeigen jeweils zur jeweiligen Basis. Wenn Du dreifache Äxte und Speere siehst: Diese Basen sind schon innerhalb der Sichtweite. Vielleicht schon um die nächste Ecke?   Die kurzen Zwerge benutzen die Äxte, die längeren Orcs die Speere.

Beschreibung von “Dark Journey” (Dunkle Reise):       

   Die Dunkle Reise beginnt dort, wo das beeindruckende Steinwerk der Zwerge den  kalten Steinen der Minen Platz macht. Hunderte Steinmetze haben eindrucksvolle Brücken, Rampen und Stufen in den Fels gehauen. Hast du genügend Zeit, um alles zu erkunden bevor Du entdeckt wirst? Behalte Deine Füße auf dem Pfad um die Spuren der Gruppe über die hohe Straße zurückzuverfolgen. Kommst Du vom Pfad ab, wirst Du zur unteren Straßen absteigen müssen und eine Menge klettern müssen. Auf der Spitze geht der Weg weiter, aber folge ihm nicht zu weit. Die Orcs haben nun ihren eigenen Stützpunkt eingerichtet!

Beschreibung von “Gollum’s Pursuit” (Gollums Verfolgung):       

   Während die Gefährten durch die Minen reisen kommen sie an eine Steilwand. Auf deren Spitze werden sie drei beeindruckenden Durchgängen gewahr. Gandalf
murmelt "An diese Stelle kann ich mich nicht erinnern!"  Während sie rasten, entdeckt Frodo, daß sie verfolgt werden...von Gollum!
   Diese ist der einzige symmetrische Level des Sets.  Die Orte beinhalten im unteren Bereich grosse Treffpunkte, gefolgt von einem kleinem Gefängnisbereich und einer Offiziersmesse. Der Fluß des Wassers führt an Formationen vorbei, durch Höhlen und...Gefahr!

Willkommen zur Großen Halle von Dwarrodelf, Level 7 des Fellowship-Sets!

Beschreibung von der Großen Halle von Dwarrodelf:       

   Als die mutige Gruppe durch die Dunkelheit stapft, kommen sie an eine große Kammer in der ihre schwachen Lichter weder die Decke noch die Wände beleuchten. Kalte Luft läßt die Gruppe frösteln, als Gandalf begeistert verkündet:"Ich werde nun ein wenig echtes Licht riskieren".  Sein Stab flammt auf und beleuchtet eine große Halle. Die massiven aus Stein gemeißelten Säulen erheben sich bis ausserhalb der Sichtweite. In einem nahen Raum entdecken sie den letzten Rastplatz von Balin, Sohn von Fundin, Herrscher über Moria.

Beschreibung von “Leap of Faith” (Sprung des Glaubens):       

  Während die Neun vor dem angsteinflößendem Balrog fliehen, stolpern sie durch ein Tor...und fallen beinahe vom zerbröckelnden Sims herab in den Tod!
  Der Blick nach unten zeigt eine Anzahl von ausgetretenen Stufen, die in die lavagefüllte Tiefe hinein führen.  Als sie eilends die Stufen nach unten nehmen, kommen sie an eine große Lücke in der Treppe, welche die meisten überspringen konnten (den Zwerg eingeschlossen, der NICHT geworfen werden möchte)!
   Die Orc-Basis am Fuße der Treppe ist das Letzte, was Dich beschäftigen wird. Der Balrog ist dir auf den Fersen!

Die letzte Herausforderung, das Licht der Welt wieder zu erblicken, besteht für die mutige Bande darin, die Brücke von Khazad-dum zu überqueren. Wie auch immer, der angsteinflößende Balrog sitzt ihnen im Nacken. Gandalf bekämpft den Dämon auf der Mitte der Brücke, und besiegt ihn...
aber zu einem hohen Preis.  Die verbliebenen Gefährten stöhnen auf, als Gandalf in die Dunkelheit stürzt...
